Waste & Energy Recovery Enhancements at the Clearwater WWTFThe Derry Township Municipal Authority (DTMA) completed facility upgrades at their Clearwater WWTF under the Energy Enhancements Project (EEP) in October 2023. Implementation of the EEP is key to their long-range plan to maximize the facility’s capability in receiving additional high strength organic wastes and to utilize on-site renewable energy for beneficial use. Under DTMA’s $16 million EEP at the Clearwater WWTF, the 2-megawatt (MW) combined heat and power (CHP) facility is fueled by biogas to power the two cogeneration engines. The CHP facility is integrated into the plant’s existing electrical and heating system to provide electricity and heat throughout. The remaining electric generation that is not consumed by the plant demand is allocated for net metering (sell back to the electric grid) and/or for banking electric demand to offset electric costs for three (3) DTMA-owned sewage pump stations located within a 2-mile radius of the CHP facility. Other improvements include biogas collection, conveyance, and conditioning system for increased capacity to transport gas throughout the facility and secondary digester modifications to include a dual membrane cover and tank mixing to maximize biogas storage and operational flexibility. With the completion of the EEP, the DTMA has successfully increased on-site renewable energy recovery & utilization capacity with the ability to accept additional HSOW for co-digestion and the increased production of biogas to fuel the CHP facility. The DTMA and its ratepayers has significantly benefited from this project, resulting in monthly operational savings with the offset of electricity, natural gas, and heating fuel costs, as well as an increase in revenue with the sale of renewable energy credits (RECs) and the additional capacity for acceptance of hauled-in waste. The project provides a net annual savings of approximately $1 million to the wastewater fund operating budget. In November 2025, the DTMA received a $4 million Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) energy tax credit for implementing CHP as a Clean Electricity Investment. These endeavors represent a vision to move the Clearwater WWTF to net-zero energy consumption now and into the future. -
Biosolids Facility Improvements at the Clearwater WWTFThe Derry Township Municipal Authority (DTMA) is implementing a biosolids drum dryer and gasification system at the Clearwater WWTF to diversify end use options, significantly reduce biosolids volume, provide regional biosolids processing and management, and to meet or exceed current regulatory challenges for land application. The project includes the procurement, delivery, and installation of the Ecoremedy, LLC drum dryer and gasification system, material handling, storage, and conveyance to include a dewatered cake receiving and transport system, and all electrical, structural support, and existing building modifications for a complete and operable system. Construction began in 2025, and construction is anticipated to be complete by Spring 2026. The DTMA received a $4.19 million grant under the Clean Water State Revolving Fund for this project addressing emerging contaminants in wastewater.
