The Spring Creek East Watershed Alliance Is Now Incorporated!

THE SPRING CREEK EAST WATERSHED ALLIANCE IS NOW INCORPORATED!

The Spring Creek East Watershed Alliance, Inc. (SCEWA) was founded on April 23, 2024 to create a healthier environment.  The Spring Creek watershed spans 24 square miles and is ultimately a part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed.  Spring Creek begins in Campbelltown, flows through Hershey, and empties into the Swatara Creek.   This tributary is small, but significant.  However, Spring Creek is unfortunately an impaired waterway.  Several environmental organizations, educational departments and government entities have partnered and collaborated with the intent to improve the environment by improving Spring Creek.   DTMA is proud to be a part of this partnership!  To help address this issue, the Center for Watershed Protection and other organizations devised a plan which focuses on the specific needs of Spring Creek. The plan is called the Spring Creek Watershed Implementation Plan, or the WIP.  This plan pinpoints problems and solutions and explores ways to improve, remediate and maintain the health of the entire watershed.  See below for recent photographs of Spring Creek.

The nonprofit SCEWA became incorporated with the Department of State of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania under the nonprofit Corporation Law of 1988 on February 03, 2026.  The Russ Collins and Doc Fritchey Chapter of Trout Unlimited (DFTU) sponsored the incorporation of SCEWA.  SCEWA gained the help of DFTU to partner on the restoration and improvement of the Spring Creek East Watershed to create a sustainable, ecologically diverse and recreationally friendly environment.  SCEWA is based in Hershey, Pennsylvania and spans through Lebanon and Dauphin County.

Remediating, improving and maintaining Spring Creek can potentially be achieved through the advancement of water quality restoration projects, erosion prevention, improved farming practices, controlling point and nonpoint source pollution from urban areas and industrial parks, implementing and improving stormwater management basins and riparian tree buffers, installing the use of pervious pavements, creating aesthetically pleasant rain gardens or similar practices in residential areas, etc.

There is a lot that can be done for our environment with the noninvasive measures outlined in the WIP!   With that as our guide, with support from other organizations, and with community involvement, we can help Spring Creek East flow long into the future!     Prospective members and volunteers may reach out to Essie Karnes, SCEWA President and Founder, at 570-213-6622.
