The Derry Township Municipal Authority (DTMA) has entered into a contract with Ankiewicz Enterprises, Inc. (Ankiewicz) to construct the Ridge Road Drainage Improvements Project (Project). The Project is underway and involves the replacement, upgrade, expansion and a degree of relocation of a large diameter storm sewer system extending from Spring Creek near Hersheypark, along Park Boulevard and Ridge Road, at the Ridge Road and West Chocolate Avenue intersection, and then south along Ridge Road to West Caracas Avenue. This project is an effort by DTMA to reduce flooding in this area during heavy rain events and to ensure vehicular and pedestrian safety.
Work drilling a new 48-inch diameter storm sewer beneath and across the Norfolk Southern Railroad had proven to be extremely difficult and resulted in delays, but has thankfully been completed. Significant and extensive rock excavation during the initial phases of the project proved extremely difficult and also hindered the pace of the work. Regardless, storm sewer installation on Park Boulevard, along Ridge Road to West Chocolate Avenue, and within the Ridge Road/West Chocolate Avenue intersection has now been completed.
Project construction work occurring throughout the remainder of 2025 will unfortunately require road closures. Ridge Road shall remain fully closed north of Towne Square Drive (K Street) to Park Boulevard. This will be a full-time closure for 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Ridge Road between West Chocolate Avenue and South 1st Street will be closed during day-time work hours. Park Boulevard shall be fully closed from Chocolate World Way to Park Avenue during day-time work hours; however, it will reopen on the weekends to accommodate traffic. With the progress made to date however, DTMA is looking to fully open Park Boulevard and Ridge Road soon.
Storm sewer installation work is currently occurring during day-time work hours on Ridge Road between West Chocolate Avenue and South 1st Street.
Message boards and detour signs are in place throughout the area to notify and reroute vehicular and pedestrian traffic accordingly.
The sewer installation and replacement work for this Project will extend to the intersection of Ridge Road and West Caracas Avenue. Per the current schedule, all excavation and associated sewer installation work for this Project should be completed by the end of 2025.
